Message From the President – April 2019

April 4, 2019   Dear MSPE Members: Spring is here, and change is in the air.  The MSPE Board of Directors is working hard with our Committee leaders to finalize the agenda for our May 2-3 conference in Lansing.  The annual conference is the time that we swear in our new officers for the 2019/2020 year.  I’ve really enjoyed helping to lead MSPE through some tough times and I’m hoping to hand over the keys to Tom Wheat, with a full tank of gas and a deluxe car wash.  Tom has been a great support to me over the last...

From the President

February 15, 2019   Dear MSPE Members:   Winter has come back with a vengeance over the last few weeks.  More than likely you have been juggling lots of travel delays, power outages, and missed work.  Not to mention all the missed school for our children!  Mine have missed 8 school days in only 2 weeks.  It’s been hard on all of us Michiganders.  The good news is that February is half over and we should be seeing more of that Spring sun very soon.  It also means that we are about to see the beginning of Engineers Week for...

MSPE Opposes Bill Treading on PE Judgment

The House of Representatives is considering H.B. 5723, a bill that might be an attempt to solve a problem that doesn't exist.  From Scott Conners: "It's imperative that the industry allow the design engineers and system operators, the experts in operations and maintenance, to choose the materials that can provide consistent and safe service. "  Read the entire article.

Message from the President

July 17,2018 Happy New Year! It may not feel like the holidays but our MSPE year starts on July 1st each year. The new board members that you swore in at the May annual conference are now officially at work helping to support MSPE in their respective roles. The 2017/2018 Board took on many difficult issues and we very much appreciate their herculean effort and professionalism. One thing that MSPE does well is to allow for continuity. Our Treasurer and Secretary are on alternating 2 year terms. So we should never lose them both in the same season. Our Regional...

Qualifications Matter – FREE Webinar

Qualifications Matter There has been a concerted effort to place a greater emphasis on price-based bidding of engineering services, in which cost would be a significant factor in determining the firm awarded a given contract. Focusing on short-term cost-savings results in less qualified bidders securing contracts for projects that, if completed without the proper expertise, can cause property damage, bodily harm, and prohibitive long-term costs. NSPE recognizes that Qualifications-Based Selection (QBS) ensures that qualified engineering firms are ranked on the basis of their design ability, experience, and judgment, to provide these services. As more legislators and regulators take action on the...

Important Message from the Board of Directors

Dear MSPE Members: Earlier today we accepted the resignation of our Executive Director, Shada Biabani.  Shada has accepted a position as the Executive Director of the Michigan Water Environment Association (MWEA).  Shada will remain with MSPE through next week with her last official day being April 13th. This is a critical time for MSPE as we work diligently to prepare for our annual conference coming up May 3-4th.  We can assure you that volunteers are stepping up to ensure that this event is a first-class conference.  We are working closely with the Western Chapter to serve as our hosts for...

NSPE releases policy on Autonomous Vehicles

NSPE represents licensed professional engineers who, under state licensure laws and rules, have a responsibility for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public, above all other considerations. With the introduction of autonomous vehicles, automation is poised to become a much larger part of our transportation environment. Much of the discussion to date has been on the technology, its capabilities, and the perceived public benefits. However, many questions remain unanswered by industry, which has led to uncertainty within the public regulatory environment. To address this uncertainty, NSPE proposes the outcome-based standards below, based on careful consideration and deliberation, as...
