23rd Annual Architects, Engineers & Surveyors Legislative Day – March 21
Why Attend Legislative Day?
The Architects, Engineers and Surveyors Legislative Committee (AESLC) represents the design profession by advocating on your behalf in the Michigan Legislature. In past legislative sessions, we have been able to pass or oppose many pieces of important legislation, for example:
2016 Passage of SB 954, Improvements to Article 20
2015 Passage of SB 309, Amendment of the State Condominium Act
2015 Passage of Public Acts 174-180, Increased funding for Transportation
2014 Passage of SB 1043, Corner Recordation Act
2014 Passage of SB 472, Amendment of the State Remonumentation Act
2013 Passage of HB 4585, Electronic Seals and Signatures
In the current 2017-2018 session, we have been very active in our work to support/oppose legislation. A few critical bills we are working on
include:
• Oppose SB 157 – Requirement for specification of plastic pipe for infrastructure projects
• Support HB 4447-4452 – Qualifications-Based Selection rules for Local Government Agencies
• Support SB 465 – Modifications to the current Lien Law
• Support SB 469 – Restoration of Historic Tax Credits
• Support HB 5335 - Michigan Infrastructure Council
We are also working with Legislators on other pieces of legislation in response to input from members from all four AESLC organizations which impact design professionals, our business practices and ultimately the health, safety and welfare of the public.
It is essential that we build relationships with our legislators to effectively represent our interests. The best way to do that is by having constituents visit them and explain why the issues are important. Appointments with your legislators will be scheduled and you will be briefed on a variety of discussion topics by our lobbyist the day of the event. There will be an additional chance to meet with Legislators during lunch at the Capitol and a reception at the end of the day.
